Darth Maul Lightsaber Discover the Lore of Darth Maul's Double-Bladed Lightsaber

Following up on his original trilogy book, Paul Duncan’s new tome covers Lucas’ creative process on the prequels. In the poetic and melancholy “Twin Sons,” Maul expresses a dying wish to know whether Obi-Wan was on the planet to guard the Chosen One. Obi-Wan says yes, and Maul dies believing that there is still hope for the Sith to rise when the Chosen One brings “balance.” In the end, Luke Skywalker brings hope to everyone — even his master’s old enemy.

Without Ahsoka’s appearance in Rebels, Maul’s fate might have been very different. Executive Producer Dave Filoni originally planned for Maul to die at Darth Vader’s hands during the season two finale. However, Ahsoka’s history with Vader was deemed more appropriate for the big season two finale.

Obi-Wan’s final lightsaber

Later, Maul waited for Amidala on Naboo, where he dueled with Qui-Gon and his apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi. The Sith fought with blinding speed and impressive agility, and stabbed Jinn through with his red double-bladed lightsaber; he would prove unable to best Obi-Wan, however. The young Jedi, in a surprising move, cut Maul in two and sent him tumbling down the planet core, seemingly destroyed.

Funnily enough, Dave Prowse’s original Vader lightsaber prop was misplaced before Return of the Jedi, so they instead used one made from the same sort of flash attachment as Luke’s. Rumors say that Prowse actually carried a highly modified version of Hamill’s original lightsaber during Jedi, but that’s never been confirmed. It was Nelson Shin who suggested that lightsabers should look ‘a little shaky,’ due to the fact that they’re composed from light. This wobbly effect was achieved by inserting one frame that was much lighter than the rest while printing the film, resulting in that iconic shaky look. The immortal words of Old Ben Kenobi (nee Obi-Wan), lifted from the scene that inspired an infinite number of playground duels. Ezra suffered aural hallucinations and saw visions of Maul, almost killing a rebel officer during one imagined attack.

Whether or not our speculation is correct, that broadsaber should be a heck of a sight in battle. Unlike Kylo Ren, Roblio Darté only had one additional crossguard blade, not two. Youngster Ezra gradually learns the ways of the Force throughout the series and eventually builds his own lightsaber.

Obi-Wan Fights Darth Maul

In real life, the design was cobbled together by a team of prop experts from bits and pieces that matched the intended look. Thought dead, Darth Maul survived his injuries by focusing on his hatred of Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Jedi who cut him in half. His shattered body was dumped amid the refuse of the junk planet Lotho Minor, where the once deadly warrior fell into madness, staying alive on a diet of vermin. When found by his brother Savage Opress, Maul had no memory of who he was, rambled nonsensically, and had built hideous spider-like legs in place of his severed ones.

According to Knoles, he was inspired by the first design McCaig made of Maul which showed a pale face with red stringy hair. The look had famously terrified George Lucas, who has shocked when McCaig presented him with the art. Bounty Hunter may have been about Jango Fett but it also introduced Komari, the former pupil of Darth Tyranus who proved to be a truly tragic character. Unlike most Sith, Komari was clearly unhinged and her pain was all too obvious.

Maul, like many other villains, earned his cyborg parts.

Sidious came to Mandalore where he declared the Zabrak brothers to be his rivals. The Sith Master killed Savage Opress and took Maul captive -- but not before joyfully torturing his old apprentice with Force lightning. Maul could have returned to something similar to McCaig’s early artwork in Solo, as unused concept designs depict the villain with long hair. It was probably the right decision though to stick with the instantly recognizable silhouette of the character for his cameo.

Star Wars

StarWars.com covered an expansive oral history on The Phantom Menace where the people behind the film discussed how it came to be. Iain McCaig, who served as the concept artist for the movie, revealed that Darth Maul was initially described in the script as "a vision from your worst nightmare" and so that was what he created. The first Darth Maul lightsaber hilt was, as mentioned, two hilts forged together, making it about 49.5 centimeters long with a blade extending from each end. Made of alloy metal, it’s a rather simple design with black accent markings and red buttons. It is a red lightsaber, as it is standard for a Sith Lord to wield a red saber.

The verbal barb Maul throws at Ahsoka — “One last attempt at glory to impress a master who has no further use for you” — is telling. He showed that very same weakness throughout the Clone Wars when he tried to return to Darth Sidious, so it seems natural that this particular effort would be on his mind when he faces Ahsoka. This isn’t unique to antagonists, but Darth Vader and General Grievous had extensive cybernetic reconstruction. Darth Maul goes through this in The Clone Wars, too, although it isn’t overtly obvious in Son of Dathomir. Maul’s original artificial legs are of a similar design to Grievous’, and were built out of Nightsister magic and scrap parts by Mother Talzin.

Fans had no idea how they were made, and – for the first two films – we only saw three of them (Luke’s first one, Obi-Wan’s, and Vader’s). Lightsabers were clearly a rare item in this world, kept like relics by the followers of an ancient religion that the vast majority of characters don’t seem to buy into. The concept appeared in George Lucas’ earliest drafts for The Star Wars, and the late, great Academy-award winning special effects genius John Stears was tasked with making the hilt.

Luckily, the artist didn't have to reach too far to come up with a second design. McCaig finally nailed it when he thought of the next scariest thing for him. On the page, MAul was described as looking like “your worst nightmare”, so that’s what McCaig drew, but it was too much for George Lucas. Still, Maul nearly had a different design entirely that, to be honest, looks more like a Cenobite from the Hellraiser movies than a Star Wars alien. Iain McCaig, who helped design Maul, explained the genesis of Maul’s terrifying look on StarWars.com, admitting that he struggled at first to design the new Sith apprentice. Yes, Darth Maul’s lightsaber has at least two kyber crystals to power it, possibly more.

The reputation of the Star Wars prequels has improved over the last few years as the kids who grew up watching these science fiction movies have grown up. While we can debate until we’re blue in the face about the quality of these particular Star Wars movies, we can all agree the prequels gave us one of the coolest-looking Star Wars characters ever. Legends tells that Darth Sidious wanted Maul to name his lightsaber, believing it would become a legendary weapon. However, Maul balked at the idea, insisting that his lightsaber was nothing more than a tool of destruction — like him. Video game concepts come and go, but the ones that really linger in the consciousness are the canceled titles that draw on a very well known franchise. While Hayden Christensen is tall, he isn’t Darth Vader tall, so when the time came for him to wear the iconic outfit of the Dark Lord, he needed a little help in the form of shoe lifts.

Said cameo was clearly meant to set up Maul having a bigger role in the sequel, too, but this likely won’t happen now due to the box office failure of Solo. We have heard that Lucasfilm plans to shift its future spinoff projects into TV shows for Disney Plus instead, however, so hopefully we haven’t seen the last of Maul in the Star Wars saga just yet.

This new lightsaber style melded marvelously with the overall Dracula-inspired look of Dooku. He was finally unleashed by his Master, Darth Sidious, in an assassination attempt on Queen Amidala on the outskirts of Tatooine. He battled briefly with Qui-Gon Jinn, the Queen’s Jedi escort, but could not reach his target.
